What is your current professional title and how long have you been in this role?

IT Operator – Global Operations – Man Group
I’ve been doing this current role for about 2 years now

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My day to day responsibilities vary from managing major incidents.
⦁ Monitoring hardware, applications and environmental conditions.
⦁ Providing 1st line support in US, Europe and Asia for network and critical applications.
⦁ Ensuring systems tasks, data backups and data centre facilities are functioning correctly.
⦁ Performing systems maintenance such as, applying software updates, replacing faulty devices and booking hardware faults with third line suppliers.

What skills are needed to be successful in your current role?

I would say having a real passion for technology and a desire to learn new skills is key, as you can develop and learn the majority of what is required for this role on the job.

That being said the following are important for my role.
⦁ Strong communication skills written and verbal.
⦁ The ability to build strong working relation.
⦁ Working under pressure and time management.

How good is your work-life balance?

My work life balance is about 60/40 (work/personal)

As i’m required to work days, evenings, nights and weekends, the change of shifts doesn’t allow me to get into a routine and means i miss a lot of social events. That being said i am fortunate that my team are fairly flexible and allow me to switch shifts every now and then.

ITIL – Foundation

What did you want to do when you were a child and what changed?

I wanted to set up a business, nothing’s changed i still do.

I’ve also had an interest in technology since i was a child, i just never considered a career in tech until i did an internship.

If you could study a different degree or work in a different industry, what would it be?

I like being creative so would like to get into the design industry, if i had the time i would also like to study.

What’s the best thing about your work current working environment?

Being able to collaborate with the business and other support teams easily, this has greatly improved my understanding of how the business work and common issues faced, this has been useful when creating solution or improving upon procedures.

What would you change about your daily work routine if you could?

Shifts!

Being unable to stick to a routine is extremely frustrating, and the unsociable hours means i miss out on a lot of social events.

What do you do for fun?

I enjoying traveling, doing activities outdoors, being by the water, or having nights out with friends

Do you have any side hustles?

Nothing currently established.

But i’m working on a few projects at the moment, which will hopefully kick off soon.

What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?

Start!

Seriously Just Start!

So many people talk about what they want to do very few actually go out and make it happen, they always have excuses as to why they can’t, when the reality is that however small there are steps they could be taking right now to work towards there goal.

Who is your role model and why?

I don’t have a role model.

I tend to focus on overcoming previous limitations rather than aspiring to be like be like someone else, however I am inspired and motivated by individuals who demonstrate immense passion for there craft and determination in times of hardship.

Do you feel you can be the same person at work and in private?

Yes

I feel my current working environment encourages individuals to be themselves, there is also a wide variety of personalities within the organization so finding like minded people is fairly easy. That being said i do take more of a diplomatic approach at work.

Where do you see your industry heading in the next 5 years?

A greater focus on the development of financial tech.
An increase in automation and the use of AI.
A higher demand for software developers.
