What is your current professional title and how long have you been in this role?
Assistant Psychologist. 2 years.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
I conduct psychological assessments and deliver therapeutic interventions to patients with a Learning Disability, Autism or Mental Health conditions.
What skills are needed to be successful in your current role?
You need to be patient and empathetic mainly. You need excellent communication skills and to be a good team player in order to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a hospital setting.
How good is your work-life balance?
Living out of London has allowed me to save more money as well as save time in order to have a better work life balance. I would say it’s great at the moment!
What academic/professional qualifications do you have?
BSc (Hons) Psychology -2:1 and MSc Clinical Psychology – Distinction
What did you want to do when you were a child and what changed?
Medicine – but I didn’t get in! It’s still a great passion of mine which I am still considering to pursue…
If you could study a different degree or work in a different industry, what would it be?
Beauty industry. I would train as an esthetician or do beauty related medical treatments (e.g. laser or fillers) and open my own business.
What’s the best thing about your work current working environment?
Due to the high risk nature of the job, the team really learns to stick together, rely on each other and we just become one big family. This makes the culture a pleasure to be part of.
What would you change about your daily work routine if you could?
What do you do for fun?
Cinema, go for walks along the river by my house, meet friends and travel
What’s the best career advice you’ve been given?
ONLY do the jobs that you are responsible or accountable for; the rest is not your business.
Since following this I have been able to time manage more efficiently.
Who is your role model and why?
My manager – he is my rock both professionally and personally. Helps with everything life throws at me. I hope I can help others as much as he does.
Do you feel you can be the same person at work and in private?
Sometimes. I can be blunt in both.
Where do you see your industry heading in the next 5 years?
Down the drain….
No organisation/government is willing to give money to the mentally ill
